From the wonderfully peculiar mind behind Napoleon Dynamite comes an eccentric comedy about Benjamin, a shy, homeschooled teenager with dreams of becoming a science-fiction writer. When he attends a fantasy writers’ camp, he submits his prized manuscript to a competition, only to discover that his literary idol, celebrated author Ronald Chevalier, has stolen his story and republished it as his own.  

What follows is a gloriously odd collision of teenage ambition, literary egos, terrible filmmaking and wildly imagined science-fiction worlds. Jemaine Clement is magnificently pompous as the creatively bankrupt Chevalier, while Sam Rockwell brings Benjamin’s bizarre fictional hero to life in increasingly ridiculous fantasy sequences. Jennifer Coolidge and Mike White add another layer of inspired weirdness to the proceedings.  

Unashamedly strange, awkward and packed with deadpan humour, Gentlemen Broncos has developed the sort of cult following that makes it particularly well suited to a Bush Theatre movie night. If Napoleon Dynamite occupies your particular corner of the comedy universe, this one ventures several planets further out.
